Dog Licking Behaviors

Dog Licking Behaviors

1. A show of affection. The dog’s mother licks her pups to clean them. The pups find it comforting and see it as a sign of affection and a good way to bond.  They in turn might lick your face or hands or other exposed skin to be  affectionate with you.

2. To get our attention.

3. They like how we taste especially after we have done physical exercise.  Sweat  contains trace amounts of sugar, amino acids and salts. The smell of  food on our face and hands after we have eaten attracts them. Also, they might lick the hands of strangers as a way of getting to knowing them. In the wild, they lick the face of their mother as a signal that they are hungry.

4. To show empathy. They sense our feelings and respond.

5. To wake us up if we have fallen and to check our breathing.

6. When they are anxious. Licking is a soothing behavior and helps them feel calm, relaxed and secure.

When is compulsive licking a problem? When it is due to:

1. Anxiety or stress.

When dogs lick constantly so as to create bald patches on their skin, they need to visit a vet. Meanwhile, try and distract the dog through play, taking walks or training exercises. Yelling at the dog to “Stop that,” will only increase the anxiety. Be positive Do not apply lotions, antibiotics or cortisone creams unless recommended by your vet. Try to identify the stressor. “Thunder shirts” might help if you are away most of the day.

2. Allergies.

Allergens are difficult to discover in dogs and people. Your Vet should be able to suggest some possible remedies.
